Play It Safe In The Sun

Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer. Protecting yourself from melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, means ensuring you and your family are protected while in the sun. People of all skin colors are at risk for this damage. You can reduce your risk by following these tips:

  • Limit your time in the sun, especially between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. when the sun's rays are most intense.
  • Wear clothing to cover skin exposed to the sun, such as long-sleeve shirts or pants, sunglasses and broad-brim hats.
  • Find shade whenever possible.
  • Use broad spectrum sunscreens with an SPF value of 30 or higher.

Emory Healthcare's Winship Cancer Institute wants you to practice sun safety this summer and throughout the year. That's why we're offering a free "Sun Safety Kit," which includes a Braves hat and sunscreen.

Simply fill out the form on this page and we'll mail your Sun Safety Kit. The delivery will be sent to you via USPS First Class Mail, within four weeks. Offer good while supplies last.

Risk Factors for Harmful Effects of the Sun's UV Rays

People of all skin colors are potentially at risk for sunburn and other harmful effects of UV radiation, so always protect yourself. Be especially careful if you have:

  • Blond, red or light brown hair
  • Been treated for skin cancer
  • Skin that burns in the sun
  • Several moles on your skin, which could increase your risk for melanoma
  • A family member who has had skin cancer
