Aortic Center

Welcome to Emory Aortic Center

The aorta is the most important artery in your body as it carries oxygen-rich blood away from the heart to all the vital organs. So, when you have an aortic condition, you truly need expert care. The Emory Aortic Center offers comprehensive care for the full range of aortic diseases and conditions.

The Center brings together the experience, expertise and passion of Emory’s cardiac and vascular surgeons, who collaborate to provide the most appropriate care for the specific needs and anatomy of each patient we see. We also work closely with referring physicians and, when appropriate, other Emory Healthcare specialists to deliver seamless, coordinated care that best meets the individual circumstances of each patient.

What is the Aorta?

The aorta is the largest artery in the body. It carries oxygen-rich blood away from the heart to your vital organs. The part of the aorta within the chest is called the thoracic aorta. Once the aorta passes to the lower half of the body, it is called the abdominal aorta.

The thoracic aorta is further classified into segments — the ascending aorta, the aortic arch, and the descending thoracic aorta. Treatment options will depend on which part of the aorta has a problem.

Clinical Trials

Patients that come to Emory may have the opportunity to participate in a research study or clinical trial. Emory Healthcare is involved in approximately 1,000 ongoing clinical trials. Our Aortic Center patients have access to the most advanced clinical trials offering patients comprehensive treatments with innovative technology. Currently, we are participating in 9 different aortic trials. If your surgeon believes you qualify for one of these studies, a research nurse will guide you through the process.
