Billing Information

How the Billing Process Works at Emory Healthcare

Although payment for all medical services is due at the time of service, we will submit a claim for you to any third party or insurance carrier we accept. Any fees not paid by the third party or insurance carrier are your responsibility.

We accept most major insurance plans as well as private and employer-based plans, and Federal Health Insurance Marketplace plans. We also accept traditional Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans.

Understanding Your Hospital Bills

At Emory Healthcare, we now provide consolidated statements that include both facility fees from the hospital and professional fees from the doctor. This means that on a single statement, you will see charges for using the hospital’s operating room, recovery room, supplies, medication, room and board for inpatients, and technical services, as well as fees for examinations, readings, and other services performed by Emory physicians and their staff.

It is important to note that a hospital may bill for charges incurred at other campuses, as Emory Healthcare facilities manage care centers at multiple locations.

Physicians, including those from our satellite locations across Georgia, charge a “professional fee.” We bill this fee through Emory Clinic. Clinic statements include charges for examinations and readings.
They also include other services performed by Emory physicians and their staff.

Services performed by Emory Hospitals routinely occur during patient visits to the clinic and vice versa. Emory does not bill twice for the same service.

Cancellation and No-Show Policy

If you can't make your appointment, please notify your provider at least 24 hours in advance. We will work with you to reschedule.

We reserve your appointment specifically for you. This policy helps us provide care for another patient if you can't attend your original time.

In some cases, same-day cancellation or missing your appointment will result in:

  • A $25 late-cancellation fee for clinic appointments.
  • A $100 late-cancellation fee for procedural appointments in our Ambulatory Surgical Centers.

Emory Healthcare charges late cancellation fees to patients, not your insurance company. However, if Emory Healthcare cancels your appointment, you will not be charged.

We understand that things that are out of your control can happen. If you miss an appointment due to a medical emergency or illness, we may provide you with an exception.

Your provider's practice manager will determine if an exception is valid. We make exceptions on a case-by-case basis. Please contact your provider directly or through your MyChart account to discuss your situation.

Hospital Outpatient Department Billing

Some Emory Healthcare locations are operated as hospital outpatient departments, which means that one of our hospitals is operating the clinic. This change may affect how you are billed.
