Health Information Exchanges

Sharing Health Records with Other Health Systems

At Emory Healthcare, you can trust us to provide forward-thinking, collaborative care. Our goal is to help you enjoy your best life.

It’s important for all members of your health care team to have complete information about your past and current medical history. That’s why we use a Health Information Exchange.

A Health Information Exchange gives your health care team secure electronic access to your medical information as needed. This includes your doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other health care professionals.

By using MyChart and Epic, our electronic health record system, we can easily communicate with other health systems across the country.

Benefits of Health Information Exchanges

A Health Information Exchange shares your medical history with everyone on your health care team. This improves the quality, coordination, speed and cost of your care.

Among the benefits of Health Information Exchanges:

  • Eliminate duplicate or unnecessary testing
  • Improve treatment outcomes
  • Help your care team provide seamless coordination of care
  • Improve accuracy and speed of diagnosis
  • Increase efficiency, reduce paperwork and lower costs
  • Reduce medication or treatment errors

How Health Information Exchanges Work

Here are some examples of how HIEs work to provide you with the best care:

  • Emergency room doctors can immediately access your medications, health conditions and recent tests.
  • An obstetrician may review your medical history if you’re pregnant and go into labor while traveling away from your doctor.
  • Your doctor can send electronic care summaries that include your medications and lab results to a specialist.

You can decide not to share your information outside of Emory. You can manage this in MyChart and when you arrive or check in for an appointment or visit one of our locations.  If you opt out of the Health Information Exchange, we will continue to share your health information but there could be a delay. We will use established methods, such as phone, fax, mail or an existing electronic medical record.
