Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)

TAVR is a minimally invasive surgical treatment for severe aortic stenosis. Aortic stenosis occurs when the aortic valve becomes stiff, narrows and restricts blood flow, forcing the heart to work harder.

During TAVR, interventional cardiologists make small incisions and insert a catheter (a thin, flexible tube) into a blood vessel. They often use a vessel in the groin. The replacement valve attaches to the catheter. The physicians replace your faulty valve with this new one.

Advantages of TAVR

TAVR does not require making an incision in the chest for open-heart surgery. It is a minimally invasive surgery.

The advantages of TAVR include:

  • Faster recovery
  • Reduced risk of complications
  • Shorter hospital stay

If you need TAVR, your doctor will explain the risks and benefits.

What to Expect After TAVR

After TAVR, you will have regular visits with your doctor. You will also have imaging tests to ensure the new valve works properly. Tell your doctor about any new or worsening symptoms, including:

  • Dizziness or light-headedness
  • Extreme tiredness with activity
  • Sudden weight gain
  • Swelling of the ankles
  • Swelling, redness or tenderness at the catheter site
When the valve in the aorta stiffens and narrows, you have aortic stenosis. This keeps the valve from opening fully and restricts blood flow to the heart.
