Colonoscopy

Colorectal Cancer Screening

A colonoscopy is a vital screening tool that helps detect changes or abnormalities in the large intestine (colon) and rectum. This procedure can identify early signs of colorectal cancer, allowing for timely intervention and treatment. Many people know about colonoscopies, but most may not realize their importance and how it can provide reassurance about digestive health.

Why is a Colonoscopy Important?

Regular colonoscopies are crucial for maintaining digestive health. They can detect polyps, which are small growths that may develop into cancer if left untreated. Early detection through a colonoscopy can significantly increase the chances of successful treatment and recovery.

Benefits of a Colonoscopy

  • Early Detection: Identifies polyps and cancer early when treatment is most effective.
  • Prevention: Removes polyps before they can develop into cancer.

Who Should Get a Colonoscopy?

  • Adults aged 45 and older: It's recommended to start regular screenings at age 45.
  • Individuals with a family history of colorectal cancer: If you have a close relative with colorectal cancer, you may need to start screenings earlier.
  • People with certain medical conditions: Conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) may necessitate more frequent screenings.

What to Expect During a Colonoscopy Procedure

A colonoscopy is typically performed on an outpatient basis. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Preparation: Follow a special diet and take a bowel prep solution to clear your colon.
  • Sedation: Most patients receive sedation to ensure comfort during the procedure.
  • Examination: A thin, flexible tube with a camera (colonoscope) is inserted into the rectum to examine the colon.
  • Recovery: After the procedure, you'll rest until the sedation wears off. You may experience mild discomfort, but this usually subsides quickly.

Your doctor will see you during recovery and share any initial findings from the procedure. Any removed polyps, or abnormal growths of tissue that protrude from the surface of the colon, will be tested. You will receive full results of your pathology report in your patient portal.
