For information on bone marrow and stem cell transplants, see our Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant Center.

Emory Healthcare is also a center for living organ donations. Learn more about registering to become a living kidney or living liver donor.

Organ Placement Program

The Emory Organ Placement Team is trained to review all organs that might be a match with our patients. This nursing team is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to review donor offers with the transplant surgeon on call.

Together with numerous organ donation organizations, our team is responsible for coordinating the transplant process from the time the initial offer is received through calling a patient to the center for their transplant. If a patient is offered a possible transplant, one of our coordinators will be in contact.

Support Before and After Surgery

Patient education and other resources are part of our care programs. For patients who travel to the region, we offer the Mason Guest House, a low-cost home-away-from-home.

Insurance and Financial Considerations

Many transplant patients combine several financial resources to pay for surgery and aftercare. Review your insurance benefits for kidney-pancreas transplant before your evaluation at Emory Healthcare. You need to know how much your insurance will pay for the procedure and medication.

Transplant surgery is expensive. Our financial coordinators and social workers can help you create a payment plan. Call 855-366-7989 to talk with a member of our staff about your specific situation.

Emory Transplant Center Biorepository for Translational Science

The Emory Transplant Center Biorepository for Translational Science (ETC Biorepository) is one of the only transplant-based biorepositories in the U.S.

A biorepository collects, catalogs and stores samples of urine, blood, tissue, cells, DNA, RNA and protein.

The ETC Biorepository collects samples from Emory patients that receive transplant services. Currently, more than 1,200 patients participate in the ETC Biorepository. Over 80,000 samples are available.

Researchers may use ETC Biorepository samples to help improve transplant results. Among the studies that the ETC Biorepository is supporting:

  • Belatacept post-depletional study
  • Clinical islet transplantation (CIT)
  • Clinical trials in organ transplantation (CTOT) in adults and children
  • Immune monitoring and assay development in organ transplant recipients
  • Solid organ transplantation in HIV
