Lung Transplant

Care for Complex Lung Disease

If you have a serious lung problem, you may need special procedures or medicines to keep you feeling well and improve your lung function. When these treatments stop working, you may need a lung transplant.

Emory Healthcare is home to Georgia’s only lung transplant program. Our expert team includes lung doctors (pulmonologists), transplant surgeons, cardiologists, transplant coordinators and specially trained nurses. We work together to provide the highest level of care.

A Destination for Lung Transplant

Whether you or a loved one needs a lung transplant, you can count on Emory Healthcare. We offer the latest therapies and the highest-quality pre- and post-transplant care.

Since 1993, Emory Healthcare has been the state’s only lung transplant center.

Our program:

  • Has performed more than 600 lung transplant surgeries.
  • Ranks at or above national one-year survival rates for lung transplant.

A lung transplant can be life-changing and lifesaving. Our outcomes and survival rates are among the nation’s best. Emory Healthcare’s risk-adjusted one-year patient survival rate for lung transplant is 94.8%, which is higher than the national average of 88.8%.

For more data and information on lung transplant survival rates, visit the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients website, a database of transplantation statistics.

Why Choose Emory Healthcare?

Emory Transplant Center is the first transplant center in the nation to earn Patient-Centered Specialty Practice (PCSP) Level 3 Recognition — the highest level of recognition a practice can receive — from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA).

Emory University Hospital was awarded the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) Gold Level Center of Excellence Award in 2024 for pulmonary, cardiac and ECPR (extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation).

Before Your Lung Transplant

A lung transplant may be the best treatment option for you. But there are many steps to take before your doctor recommends or approves lung transplant surgery.

Throughout your transplant journey—before and after lung transplant surgery—you may need help managing stress and anxiety. Talk with your doctor about feelings of anxiety or depression.

How Lung Transplant Works
A visit with our lung transplant team is just the start of your transplant journey. We will work with you from your initial evaluation through transplant treatment and beyond.

Getting Approved for a Lung Transplant

You must meet very specific criteria to be eligible for a lung transplant. Our transplant team will review these criteria with you during your initial evaluation.

To receive approval for a lung transplant, you must complete a medical evaluation. This involves testing in the hospital and our transplant offices.

Pre-lung transplant testing includes:

  • Abdominal imaging
  • Blood tests
  • Bone density scan
  • Chest computed tomography (CT)
  • Chest X-ray
  • Complete medical history and physical exam
  • Echocardiogram EKG (electrocardiogram)
  • Heart catheterization
  • Pulmonary function test (PFT)
  • Swallowing tests
  • Urine tests
  • Ventilation/perfusion lung scan (VQ scan)

Additionally, during your evaluation, you will meet with a transplant surgeon, transplant mental health specialist, social worker, nutritionist, financial coordinator and transplant coordinator.
