Cornea specialists at the Emory Eye Center utilize the latest techniques and advances in the field to treat simple and advanced problems caused by disease, genetic predisposition, injury or aging to the structures in the front regions of the eye. These include cataracts (when the natural lens inside the eye becomes cloudy and blurs vision), keratoconus, corneal abrasions, other conditions that affect the outer layers of the eye, and refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

Emory Eye Center's highly-skilled oculoplastic physicians, also known as eye plastic or oculo-facial surgeons, perform both plastic (reconstructive) and cosmetic facial surgery on the structures and area around the eyes to correct abnormalities and aesthetically enhance the appearance of patients. They are also specialists in nonsurgical, cosmetic facial services that counteract the normal effects of aging to create a natural, healthier, more youthful appearance.

LASIK and Refractive Surgery

Laser in Situ Keratomileusis ("LASIK") is a laser procedure that can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. LASIK involves creating a protective flap from the outside layer of the cornea and sculpting the middle layer to correct refractive error and improve vision. The outside flap is then repositioned over the sculpted area, much as a band-aid. The FDA's ophthalmic devices advisory panel has recommended FDA approval for the LASIK procedure using a surgical system developed by Emory cornea surgeons.
