Interoperability at Emory Healthcare

Interoperability is health information systems working together, within, and across organizational boundaries to advance care delivery for individuals and communities. Without technology, we limit our ability to share valuable, and timely, information with care givers and patients. At Emory Healthcare we are committed to expanding and securely sharing clinical information to provide a seamless point of care treatment.

In this document you will find all of Emory Healthcare’s interoperability tools and how they allow us to connect with one another to benefit our patients.

Emory Healthcare Link

Also known as EpicCare Link
Emory Healthcare Link (EHC) – is a secure, web-based portal available to community providers, their office staff, and others who require access to patient clinical information within Emory Healthcare EHR (Epic). All that is required to access EHC Link is the latest version of a trusted web browser with stable Internet connection and granted user credentials.

Available clinical content includes provider notes, lab results, diagnostic images, discharge summaries, patient demographics, insurance information and eligibility.

Event Monitor, a dashboard within EHC Link, notifies the practice when a mutual patient is admitted, discharged or has new test results available from any Emory Healthcare facility. You can also see patient encounters from other partner organizations within EHC Link.

Emory Healthcare is continually reviewing Epic optimizations to ECH Link and will communicate new functionality as released.

Care Everywhere - Located in Emory Healthcare Epic Hyperspace

Care Everywhere is a module within Epic Hyperspace that supports the secure sharing of clinical data between health care providers and organizations.

Within Care Everywhere you will be able to exchange patient data with the Department of Defense Health Network, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Health Network, and soon the Social Security Administration, all health systems that use Epic, and many local systems that use other EHRs.

Specific data, such as current problems, allergies, medications and immunizations may be available for reconciliation with local records to provide a more complete view of patient information.

Emory Healthcare has successfully sent 3.9 million patient records and received 2.4 million patient records since 2020. With our commitment to provide world class healthcare, we know that interoperability between other organizations and providers will transcend clinical decisions and provide optimal treatment to our patients.

Direct Secure Messaging 

Direct Secure Messaging allows healthcare organizations and providers to securely push patient clinical information from one EHR system to another. Emory Healthcare automatically sends transitions of care messages via Direct Secure Messaging at the time of hospital discharge and ambulatory referrals, when a referring provider and PCP is documented in the chart. Support for care transitions, care coordination and referrals, as well as other cases where clinical information must be sent securely between systems. These messages contain standard patient information including, problems, procedures, medications, allergies, diagnosis, immunizations, vital signs, and labs.

Emory Healthcare can send and receive patient clinical information with other Epic organizations as well as with other EHR vendors. Direct Messaging provides a continuum of care across organizations and providers.

Please reach out to your EHR vendor to see if Direct Secure Messaging capabilities are available to exchange clinical data with Emory Healthcare.

Carequality

Carequality is a national non-profit public-private partnership operated by The Sequoia Project, providing a standardized interoperability framework to link data sharing networks. Carequality allows you to query and retrieve patient clinical information from Emory Healthcare, and across organizations where your patient has been previously treated, directly from your EHR. This benefit is extremely helpful with new patients, ED visits, or when a patient is traveling or recently moved from out of state.

Most major EHRs and other health information technology vendors are currently able to exchange patient data via Carequality, and many others are in the process of implementing this functionality. Check with your EHR vendor to determine if they participate in the Carequality network. If they do, you will need to work directly with your vendor on technical configurations, or an upgrade to a newer version. Once you are live on the Carequality network, you will automatically be able to query Emory Healthcare for patient clinical information.
