Airway Surgeries

Advanced Care So You Can Breathe Easy

Airway problems can lead to shortness of breath and difficulty swallowing or speaking. Thoracic surgeons at Emory Healthcare offer advanced treatments for conditions affecting the lower part of your airway (trachea).

Our team is part of the Emory Complex Airway Program. We are the only comprehensive airway treatment program in Georgia that uses minimally invasive robotic surgical approaches to treat airway conditions.

This group combines the expertise of Emory’s thoracic surgeons, pulmonary specialists, ear, nose and throat doctors, and speech-language pathologists. We provide collaborative care for the most complex airway problems.

In August 2021, Drs. Manu Sancheti and Onkar Khullar successfully performed Georgia’s first robotic-assisted tracheobronchoplasty to treat tracheobronchomalacia (collapsed windpipe) at Emory University Hospital Midtown.

Surgeries We Offer

Emory's thoracic surgeons offer various surgical procedures to treat problems affecting your trachea (windpipe).

Tracheal Dilation

Stenosis is a condition that causes the trachea to narrow. When stenosis occurs, surgeons perform tracheal dilation to widen the trachea.

During tracheal dilation, thoracic surgeons use a balloon or a tracheal dilator to stretch or widen the trachea.

Tracheal Resection

Surgeons perform tracheal resection to:

  • Remove scar tissue following certain medical procedures
  • Repair a tracheal fistula, a condition which can occur after a tracheotomy
  • Remove cancerous and noncancerous tumors from the windpipe

Tracheobronchoplasty

Surgeons perform tracheobronchoplasty to repair or strengthen the trachea if you have a collapsed windpipe (tracheomalacia). Emory Healthcare was the first—and remains the only—place in Georgia to offer robotic tracheobronchoplasty.

Emory Healthcare is right here, right when you need us. Our caring team of surgical experts can help you with your thoracic surgery concerns.
