  • Creating an optimal sleep environment
  • Establishing a regular sleep-wake schedule
  • Exe rcising more
  • Limiting the use of screens before bedtime
  • Quitting smoking
  • Restricting time in bed without sleeping
  • Using your bed only for sleep

Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia

Emory Sleep Center works with a board-certified psychologist to provide behavioral therapies for chronic insomnia. The most common sleep therapy is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I).

CBT-I has two areas:

  • Behavioral strategies, which include ways to help you sleep better using sleep therapy recommendations, such as having a regular bedtime and avoiding caffeine and alcohol at night. Your treatment may involve relaxation techniques, such as meditation, deep breathing and progressive relaxation.
  • Cognitive restructuring looks at how your thoughts and emotions can affect your sleep, how to change your negative thoughts about sleep and teaches about common sleep myths. You’ll learn how to decrease your stress and manage issues like anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Behavioral therapy treats many sleep conditions. These include insomnia, hypersomnia, sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome and narcolepsy.
