Mission
“To nurture healing and regeneration of our Earth and ourselves.”
Focus (WHAT)
Climate, Garden (Land Management), Lifecycle (Purchasing to Waste), Community Outreach
Vision Statement
As a Hospital, we take ownership of our potential as a community of healers. We feel empowered to fight against the climate crisis and connect through our shared love of gardening and stewardship.
Our campus welcomes the whole Hillandale Community and promotes Environmental Justice and mentors. We envision a community of prideful belonging and leadership. Within our walls, we see gathering together - engagement between staff, patients, and community (WHO). When we step outside - we envision bird songs, benches, and growing green beauty. We envision renewable energy, smart purchasing-to-waste life cycle decisions, and best land management practices.
We Believe (WHY)
- We can build something more beautiful at Hillandale.
- Our Hillandale community has been historically underfunded and disadvantaged.
- We recognize Environmental Racism.
- The Climate Crisis is exactly that, a crisis. We are responsible to our children - the future of this Earth.
- Our Emory Hospital system holds tremendous privilege and potential for healing. We are accountable and responsible to our Hillandale community.
Culture of Urgency (WHEN)
We want to act on these today, and this spring. These changes are well overdue.
- Short-Term Goals: Start a Community Garden this Spring 2024, Recycle, Retrofit LED lights, End Styrofoam Purchasing, Outdoor Cleanup, Movement Programming (Yoga)
- Long-Term Goals: Community Outreach (Garden Events, Speakers, High School), Solar Panels, LED retrofit Hospital-Wide, Food Forest, Greenway Corridor, Rehab Patient Engagement, Align to Emory Office of Sustainability Climate Goals, Share with Other Emory Campuses.
Strategic Plan (HOW):
I. Support culture change among healthcare, and operational units to carry forward courageous action on sustainability.
II. Expand the network of Green Team Champions to strengthen leadership at every level.
III. Use Emory landscape, buildings, and operations to model sustainable choices.
IV. Create strategic partnerships with local community members to expand the healing environment beyond EHC facilities. National, and international institutions to build flourishing and resilient communities.
V. Members (25+): Rehab, Lab, Community Members, Physicians, Facilities, Environmental Services, Operations, Infection Control
Whoever you are, please come join us :) All hands and hearts are welcome.
