Simone Whitehead was an active 30-year-old, running half marathons and chasing around her 2-year-old son. In April 2016, she began to feel ill, and she slowly started getting worse. Tests revealed that her liver was failing and that she would need a liver transplant. The first liver transplant in Georgia was performed in 1987 by transplant surgeons at Emory University Hospital. Today, Emory Transplant Center is known for its Liver Transplant Program nationwide. It performs approximately 150 adult liver transplants each year and ranks no. 2 among liver transplant centers nationally by volume and survival outcomes. Our program has a long tradition of treating end-stage liver disease and portal hypertension, and providing the full continuum of lifesaving care involved in liver transplantation.
