Emory Healthcare Veterans Program (EHVP)'s Accelerated Brain Health Program provides no-cost, evidence-based mental health treatment for eligible post-9/11 veterans and service members both in person at our clinic in Atlanta, Georgia, or via telehealth in participating states. The two-week program for posttraumatic stress, traumatic brain injury, military sexual trauma, anxiety, and depression reduces symptoms, promotes health and wellbeing, and improves relationships and social functioning.
Accelerated Brain Health Program
While in the program, you will stay at a hotel near our clinic and attend daily appointments in the clinic from approximately 0800-1700. In addition, you'll participate in group activities in the evenings and on the weekends.
Treatment in EHVP's Accelerated Brain Health Program is customized to your unique experiences and goals. A detailed schedule is provided prior to your start date.
Treatments and services associated with the program include:
Psychotherapy
This includes talk therapy, which focuses on thoughts and behaviors and how they can influence mood. Talk therapy can help you become more comfortable with your memories and learn to think differently about them, thus allowing you to feel safer and more at ease in situations that can trigger troubling memories.
Case Management
You will be assigned a social worker who works closely with you prior to, throughout, and after the program. Our social workers will identify services and resources in your community to ensure the transition from treatment back home goes smoothly.
Medication Education
Many medications are now widely used to help manage anxiety, depression, traumatic brain injury, and other mental health conditions. You will have the opportunity to discuss medication with a nurse practitioner to better understand the medicines you are currently on and/or learn about other medication options that could benefit you.
Stress Management Skills
You will learn specific strategies for managing memory or thinking difficulties as well as reducing anxiety. Sessions will also include skills that can improve your mental health and life in general.
Sleep Training
Many veterans and service members have trouble sleeping or experience poor sleep quality. During the program, you will learn techniques to help you unwind and get the sleep you need.
Wellness
You will have the opportunity to participate in yoga sessions, wellness classes, and music therapy, and learn about communication and coping skills.
Family and Relationship Education
Recognizing that service, deployments, and invisible wounds such as posttraumatic stress can impact all family members and relationships, EHVP's relationship skills sessions are designed to help you rebuild and strengthen these connections by fostering support and understanding of military-related trauma and other stressors. You may invite adult family members and/or other supportive loved ones or friends to participate in the relationship skills sessions via telehealth.
