How Emory’s Inpatient Pharmacy Team Supports Your Care During Your Hospital Stay

When you're admitted to a hospital, a team of specially trained pharmacists works behind the scenes to make sure you get the right medications at the right time.

These inpatient hospital pharmacies are located inside our hospitals and support your care 24/7. They check for possible drug interactions, prepare complex medications and partner with your doctors and nurses to help you heal safely and quickly.

You may not always see them, but their work is an important part of your recovery.

Inpatient Hospital Pharmacy

Emory’s Inpatient Hospital Pharmacy is a centralized model, which means you benefit from true interdisciplinary care. Our pharmacists work directly with your doctors and nurses.

We handle medication preparation and distribution for every area of the hospital. This includes the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit and all specialty units. If you move from one area to another, you receive continuity of care.

Our team provides 24-hour service every day.

What Medications to Bring to the Hospital

When you’re coming to the hospital for an inpatient stay, bring a complete list of every medicine you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medications.

Leave your actual medications at home. However, if you take a complex or costly medicine, your care team may ask you to bring it to the hospital. Your doctor will talk with you about this after you’re admitted.

What to Expect During Your Stay

While you’re in the hospital, our clinical pharmacists help you and your care team manage your medications. They ensure every medication is safe and effective for you. They also monitor your medicines to prevent adverse drug reactions.

Our inpatient team can answer questions you or your family members have about your medicines. Tell your care team if you have questions. They can have a pharmacist talk with you.

Medication Management After Your Leave the Hospital

Before you leave the hospital, our hospital pharmacists will give you instructions about how to take your medications at home. This may be a different routine than what you did in the hospital.

We’ll also provide information about Emory’s community pharmacies and Emory Specialty Pharmacy. These are options where a doctor will talk with you about this after you’re admitted.
