Cystic Fibrosis Treatments

Care and Support That Empowers You

Living with cystic fibrosis is challenging, especially when you enter adulthood and must learn to care for yourself. The Emory Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program helps make the transition easier. We provide cystic fibrosis treatments to address the physical, emotional and lifestyle factors associated with the disease, so you can take charge of your health.

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation recognizes our program as an accredited cystic fibrosis care center. Here, your team of experts will provide care based on the best available medical evidence. They create a treatment plan just for you that addresses your cystic fibrosis and the related conditions the disease may cause.

From the latest therapies and promising clinical trials to genetic counseling and mental health services, you’ll find everything you need at Emory Healthcare. Together, we can help you achieve better health and well-being.

Cystic Fibrosis Treatments We Offer

Cystic fibrosis treatments may vary from person to person. There is no cure for the disease, but life expectancy has increased dramatically in recent decades. The right treatment may help you manage your symptoms, live longer and improve your quality of life.

Specific cystic fibrosis treatments that may be part of your care include:

  • Mucus-clearing therapies: Chest percussion (clapping on the chest or back) may loosen lung mucus, so it’s easier to cough and clear your lungs.
  • Inhaled medications: Several medicines may help thin mucus and open airways in your lungs, allowing you to breathe more easily.
  • Enzyme capsules: These pills may aid digestion.
  • Antibiotics: Antibiotic drugs may help prevent or treat infections.
  • Surgery: Sometimes, we perform surgery to remove a blockage in your digestive system or eliminate nasal polyps. Some patients may need a lung transplant.

Our Approach to Your Care

Our approach to cystic fibrosis treatment includes:

  • Combined endocrinology/pulmonology care: Cystic fibrosis can contribute to diabetes and other endocrine conditions. These include osteoporosis (a bone-thinning disease) and fertility issues. Our endocrinology/pulmonology clinic collaborates to ensure you receive personalized care for lung health and related endocrine concerns.
  • Genetic counseling: Genetic counselors with experience in cystic fibrosis can provide information, guidance and support. Many people want to learn more about their genetic background or reproductive and family planning options. Our genetic counselors can help you make informed choices for your health and future.
  • Mental health services: Living with cystic fibrosis can be emotionally and psychologically challenging. We offer mental health screening, counseling, coping strategies and resources. Our goal is to strengthen your emotional well-being and resilience while we work to meet your physical health needs.
  • Team-based care: Cystic fibrosis affects many aspects of your health and life. So, you benefit from experts with specialized training in cystic fibrosis. Team members who work together to provide your care at Emory include physicians, nurses, social workers, respiratory therapists, registered dietitians, genetic counselors, mental health providers and pharmacists. During outpatient visits, team members come directly to your exam room, so you don’t have to schedule multiple visits. If you’re hospitalized, they play an important role in your care.
  • Transition care: When you transition from pediatric to adult care, it’s normal to experience stress about getting the care you need. Our dedicated team can support you medically and emotionally and help with lifestyle adjustments. We offer self-management education, personalized support and resources.

At Emory Healthcare, research is part of our efforts to improve care for you and for people who get the disease in the future.

Your participation in clinical trials helps in our work. These trials focus on a variety of areas. They may improve our understanding of the disease, identify lab tests to help us evaluate the condition and lead to new cystic fibrosis treatments.

Participation in clinical trials is voluntary. If you choose to take part, your safety and well-being are our top priorities.
