What is the Nurse Residency Program?
The Nurse Residency Program is a one-year evidence-based program developed by the Vizient/AACN. Emory Healthcare has adopted this program and administers it on-site at Emory Healthcare. It consists of monthly sessions for the first full year of practice to support the new nurse residents as they transition into their first professional role in nursing. Outcome data from the residency have demonstrated that, through participation in the residency, residents develop improved confidence, competence, communication skills, and leadership capabilities. They also demonstrate a decrease in stress levels. Residency sessions and facilitator support are planned and delivered with the primary goal of assisting the new resident nurse in acquiring the skills necessary to become successful as a full partner of the health care team.

Is there a work commitment?
No. Emory Healthcare does not require work commitments or contracts.

How and when do I apply?
Positions for new grad nurses are available throughout the year for all Emory Healthcare hospitals. We try to have new grad nurses at each facility start around the same time to facilitate their orientation into their unit-based residency program. We have three large hiring events a year.
Do I have to wait until I have passed boards to apply?
All new grads are required to have a Georgia RN license before beginning employment (but not before applying) and must have passed their NCLEX exam. Note that Emory Healthcare participates in Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC), which means we welcome RNs from states participating in the compact as of January 1, 2018. You should, though, be near completion of your nursing program and the licensing process when you apply.
What are the requirements?
- Bachelor’s or master’s in nursing
- Active Georgia RN license or RN license from eNLC participating states
- This is not required to apply; however, you should be near completion of your nursing program and the licensing process—it will be required to work at Emory Healthcare
- Current American Heart BLS card
- Resume required at the time of application
- Additional references may be required
What should I include in my résumé?
Look at all of your work experience. Any work experience might be relevant because you can transfer skills. Also, include your area of interest and all of the details of your clinical rotations while in school, such as department/service line, areas, and approximate duration. Please highlight senior practicum.
What is the interview process?
Applicants proceeding to the interview stage of the hiring process interview with Human Resources and the unit director or other leaders/clinicians for the area. If you proceed in the process, you will receive a formal job offer from Human Resources. Before starting employment, all pre-employment requirements must be met (e.g., Georgia RN license, satisfactory criminal background check, health assessment, references, etc.).
What orientation do new hires attend?
In addition to the residency program, orientation/new-hire training varies based on individual needs/requirements. New employees attend a two-day required orientation. Then, all nurses attend a patient service orientation. They may also take computer classes and other class requirements. Units provide unit-specific orientation.
Do I get to choose my department/shift/location?
We strive to meet the new grad's preferred interest, but we place according to our availability of positions.
