Male Urinary Incontinence Treatments

Male Incontinence Treatments

At Emory Healthcare, we know how uncomfortable male incontinence can be. Our experienced urology team can help you find relief. Our doctors will work with you to determine the cause and scope of your condition. They can help you choose a treatment plan that fits your goals and needs.

Lifestyle Changes

Some simple lifestyle changes can help with incontinence.

  • Bladder training, exercises to hold urine longer
  • Diet changes, to decrease or eliminate alcohol, caffeine and spicy foods
  • Pelvic floor exercises, to strengthen muscles that control urination and support the bladder and penis

Medications To Stop Incontinence

Medicines can help relax the muscles in the bladder or prostate. Prescription medications may:

  • Improve the flow of urine
  • Increase the capacity of your bladder
  • Reduce the urge to urinate

Catheter Drainage

If medication doesn’t help your incontinence, your doctor may suggest trying catheter drainage, often temporarily. A catheter is a thin, plastic tube that drains urine. There are two types:

  • Indwelling: Remains in the bladder to drain urine continuously into a bag you wear
  • Intermittent: Insert as needed to empty the bladder, and then remove

Surgical Treatments for Incontinence

Sometimes, your doctor may recommend surgery. The type of surgery is based on the cause of your leakage. Emory Healthcare Urology Services offers:

  • Artificial urinary sphincter: Controls urine flow
  • Botox injection: Relaxes bladder muscles and urge to urinate
  • Prostate surgery: Removes part or all of an enlarged prostate gland
  • Sacral nerve stimulation: A device that modulates/adjusts the nerve signals to your bladder.
