After surgery, we care for your amputated limb to prevent infection and ensure healing. Our team will show you how to keep it healthy.

Some people experience “phantom pain” in the amputated area. These are painful sensations that seem to come from the removed area.

Medication, physical therapy and self-care techniques can help reduce your pain.

Physical therapy includes exercises to help you be independent whether you use a prosthesis or not. The purposes of these exercises include:

• Improve your balance
• Increase your range of motion
• Maintain your mobility
• Strengthen your muscles

Occupational therapy teaches you how to do things with and without a prosthesis. You learn how to manage activities of daily living, like eating, bathing, dressing and more.

If you need assistive devices, your occupational therapist will show you how to use them. These devices include wheelchairs, canes and tools for daily tasks.

If you choose to get a prosthesis, a prosthetist will measure you and fit you for it. They will help you decide which one is best for you based on your activity level.

Your prosthetist will show you how to use and care for your prosthesis. They’ll provide a schedule for wearing it and advice on how to handle any discomfort.
