Physical Therapy

Making Movement Easier

Movement makes everyday life easier. But if illness, injury, advancing age or surgery have affected your ability to move pain-free, there’s nothing easy about it. Physical therapy (PT) at Emory Rehabilitation can get you moving again comfortably and confidently.

At Emory, you’ll find physical therapists who know the frustrations that come with movement challenges and disability. We listen to your struggles, concerns and fears. Then, we work with you to address them. You can rely on us for a personalized treatment plan, support and encouragement to meet your goals.

Depending on your needs, you may begin PT with inpatient rehabilitation or as an outpatient. We offer outpatient PT throughout Metro Atlanta. We make it easy for you to get moving again so you can return to living your life.

Prepare for Your First Physical Therapy Visit

To schedule a PT appointment, you need a referral from your doctor. We accept most major insurance plans, excluding Medicaid.

When calling to schedule your appointment, please be ready to provide:

  • The name of your referring physician

  • The nature of your problem

  • Your employer’s name (for workers’ compensation claims)

  • Your insurance company and claim number

  • Your phone number

When you arrive for your visit, please bring:

  • Identification

  • Insurance referrals as needed

  • Proper clothing for your evaluation and movement (for example, shorts for hip/knee problems)

  • Your co-pay amount, if required

  • Your doctor’s prescription

What to Expect at Your Appointment

At your first PT appointment, your therapist will talk with you about your condition, symptoms and medical history. They will then perform an assessment. This may involve evaluating your strength, range of motion, balance and mobility.

Your therapist will teach you about your condition and work with you to develop goals and a treatment plan. Treatment may start at your first visit, but follow-up visits are likely to continue. Often, the therapist will provide exercises for you to do on your own, between appointments.

Your therapist will communicate with your doctor, surgeon and other members of your care team. As needed, they will involve other experts in your care, including those from occupational therapy.
