You will begin with a driving simulator. This is stationary equipment you use inside to practice real-life skills.
Your therapist may provide adaptive tools to help you drive. These can include hand controls, pedal extenders and seat modifications.
If you have visual or cognitive difficulties, you may need specialized training. This can improve your reaction time and recognition of hazards.
After you finish training in the simulator, you will do practical training. You will drive on the road with your therapist. We prepare you for the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Driver Test or Adaptive Driver Assessment.
In some cases, your therapist may determine that it’s not safe for you to drive. We understand this news may be difficult to hear. That’s why we provide alternative transportation options so you can maintain your independence.
