LASIK Surgery

Safe and Effective LASIK Surgery

Your eyes are your windows to the world, and good vision is key to taking it all in. LASIK surgery can help you see more clearly without glasses or contact lenses.

Our vision correction surgeons are at the forefront of using leading-edge LASIK techniques and technology. The team at our LASIK and Refractive Surgery Program has provided comprehensive, expert care for more than three decades.

At Emory Eye Center, we work with you to create a customized treatment plan to reduce your dependence on glasses or contacts.

What is LASIK Surgery?

LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) and PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) are procedures that use a laser to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. They provide precision results and fewer complications.

During surgery, automated lasers reshape the cornea to reduce the need for corrective lenses. Studies show that over 99% of people see better after LASIK surgery.

Nearly 700,000 LASIK procedures take place each year in the United States. This number includes many LASIK surgeons and their families.

Is LASIK Surgery Right for You?

While there are effective treatment options for people who weren’t good candidates in the past, LASIK surgery isn’t for everyone.

To determine if you are eligible, we perform a custom evaluation. We will map your cornea and provide you with a personal vision profile. Your profile offers details, including:

  • The shape of your eyes
  • How your eyes respond to light
  • How well your eyes work together
  • Other factors that rule out surgery

This profile enables our team to make sure you are a good candidate for LASIK surgery.

What to Expect During LASIK Surgery

LASIK surgery is a quick and relatively painless outpatient procedure.

You will be awake during surgery, but we typically give you medicine to help you relax. Your surgeon will place numbing drops in your eyes and apply a tool that holds your eyelids open. In most cases, the procedure takes 30 minutes or less. You will have several follow-up appointments with your LASIK surgeon.

Your surgeon will personally examine you the day after your procedure, as well as at your two-week, three-month and one-year appointments.

Risks of LASIK Surgery

Like all surgeries, LASIK has risks. These include:

  • Double vision
  • Dry eyes
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Trouble seeing at night

These symptoms usually clear up within a few weeks or months.

Cataracts happen when the natural lens inside the eye becomes cloudy and blurs your vision.
