Pediatric Ophthalmology

Advanced Treatment for Eye Conditions in Kids

If your child has an eye condition or needs routine vision care, you can count on the pediatric ophthalmologists at Emory Eye Center. Our experts treat common vision problems and complex childhood eye diseases and disorders.

We have special expertise in pediatric glaucoma treatment and research. Our team developed new methods for treating this condition.

We also partner with Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta to ensure you have access to every treatment option for childhood eye tumors.

Eye Care for Children

Our fellowship-trained pediatric ophthalmologists treat a wide range of pediatric eye conditions, including:

  • Cataracts
  • Cornea disease
  • Cortical visual impairment (damage to vision processing areas of the brain)
  • Eye disease affecting babies born prematurely
  • Eye misalignment (strabismus or crossed eyes)
  • Genetic eye conditions
  • Glaucoma
  • Neuro-ophthalmic disease
  • Vision loss from amblyopia (lazy eye)

Your treatment will vary based on your diagnosis, but may include:

  • Assistive devices, including patches, glasses and corrective lenses (contacts)
  • Laser surgery Medications, including drops, gels or ointments
  • Surgery
  • Vision rehabilitation

Our pediatric ophthalmology team also works with our oculoplastic surgery team. Together, we treat droopy eyelids (ptosis), tear duct obstruction and tumors. And we partner with Emory Eye Center retina specialists to treat retinopathy of prematurity, retinoblastoma, development disorders affecting retinal blood vessels and uveitis.

Care for Adults with Strabismus

Because strabismus is more common in children, pediatric ophthalmologists often treat adults. Our pediatric ophthalmology team has special expertise in adult strabismus care. We offer several treatments to relieve strabismus symptoms like double vision and depth perception problems.

Treatments include:

  • Glasses with prism lenses to help with eye movement or alignment problems
  • Refractive correction (standard treatment for nearsightedness and farsightedness) with glasses, contact lenses or refractive surgery
  • Eye muscle surgery
Georgia Lions Partnership

Good vision is essential for proper development. To care for all children—from diagnosis and treatment—we’ve partnered with Georgia Lions to create the Georgia Lions Children’s Eye Care Center. Our doctors focus on diagnosing and treating childhood eye diseases early, before they lead to vision loss.

Funding from the Georgia Lions has supported several important initiatives.

Emory Eye Center pediatric ophthalmologists care for children with vision problems and eye disease, including glaucoma—a leading cause of blindness.
