Your bone density—how strong and thick your bones are—decreases as you get older. Bone density scans can help assess your bone health and inform your treatment plan.

Bone Density (DEXA)
Convenient, Sophisticated Bone Health Imaging
What is a DEXA Bone Density Test?
A bone density test is an osteoporosis screening tool. It’s an X-ray that measures the amount of calcium and other minerals in your bones. While it can assess any bone, we usually use the test to evaluate your spine and hips.
Based on your test results, we can:
- Determine your risk of fracture
- Monitor your response to osteoporosis treatment
- Record your bone density changes over time
What to Expect from DEXA
DEXA tests don’t require any special preparation. You can eat normally on the day of your exam. Your doctor will discuss with you how long to avoid calcium supplements prior to the test. Wear loose-fitting clothing and remove belts, jewelry or anything else that contains metal.
The DEXA machine looks like a padded table with an overhead arm containing imaging equipment. For the test, you will lie on the exam table. You must remain still so we can collect clear images. We may also ask you to hold your breath for a few seconds while we capture pictures. Overall, the procedure is painless and only lasts a few minutes.
