Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear Medicine at Emory Healthcare: Advanced Imaging for Accurate Diagnosis and Treatment

Nuclear medicine uses small, safe amounts of radioactive material to help diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions. It can help treat a range of conditions, from heart disease and cancer to thyroid and bone disorders.

These advanced scans show how your organs and tissues are working, not just what they look like. With our expert team and state-of-the-art technology, you’ll get accurate results and care tailored to your needs.

What is Nuclear Medicine?

Nuclear medicine uses radiotracers (small amounts of radioactive material), a camera and a computer to see how organs and tissues are working.

It is a safe, painless and cost-effective way to collect information that we may otherwise only get with surgery or more expensive tests.

"The two ladies that did my test were very good and treated me with respect and kindness. That's why I trust and enjoy coming to this Emory location.  Best staff ever!"

Types of Nuclear Imaging

Our specially-trained technologists use nuclear imaging for various tests and procedures. These include:

  • Bone imaging
  • Brain imaging
  • Cardiac imaging
  • CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) imaging
  • Dacryocystography
  • Gastric emptying imaging
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding imaging
  • Hepatobiliary imaging
  • Lung ventilation/perfusion imaging
  • Lymphoscintigraphy
  • MIBG (iodine meta-iodobenzylguanidine) imaging
  • Nuclear stress test to measure blood flow to the heart
  • Octreotide imaging
  • Parathyroid imaging
  • PET (positron emission tomography)
  • Renal imaging
  • Therapeutic nuclear medicine (thyroid, lymphoma, MIBG, bone pain, radium-223)
  • IWBC (white blood cell) imaging
  • Thyroid imaging

What to Expect During Your Procedure

How you prepare for your nuclear imaging scan depends on the type of test you’re having. Your care team will give you specific instructions ahead of time.

You’ll receive a small dose of radiotracer either shortly before your appointment or up to a few days in advance, depending on the procedure.

Before your procedure, you’ll remove metal jewelry and possibly change into a gown. During your procedure, we may ask you to hold your breath or change positions.

Your body will get rid of the radiotracer soon after your procedure. Your nuclear medicine technologist will reach out to you about your results.
