Trusted Ultrasound Services at Emory Healthcare: Safe, Detailed Imaging You Can Rely On

At Emory Healthcare, we use advanced ultrasound technology to help diagnose and monitor a wide range of health conditions—quickly, safely and without radiation.

Whether you need an ultrasound for pregnancy, abdominal pain, blood flow concerns, or another reason, our expert team is here to guide you through every step.

What is an Ultrasound?

Ultrasound is a painless, noninvasive test that uses sound waves to create real-time images of your body, helping your doctor make accurate decisions about your care.

Most ultrasound exams use a hand-held device called a transducer outside your body. But some insert a device into your body. The transducer is attached to a video monitor and computer.

Images from an ultrasound help doctors diagnose or monitor diseases or health conditions. Your doctor may order an ultrasound for a variety of reasons. These may include:

  • Check blood flow
  • Confirm and monitor a pregnancy
  • Diagnose gallbladder disease
  • Guide a needle for a biopsy
  • Identify breast lumps

"My treatment was fast and efficient. The staff that I encountered were warm and welcoming. They attentively listened to my concerns and were able to find a diagnosis that another hospital system overlooked. I'm so happy with my decision to come to Emory. In turn, I was able to receive care and prevent potential problems for myself and my unborn child."

What to Expect During Your Test

Your doctor will give you instructions for the type of ultrasound you’re having. They may tell you not to eat or drink before your exam.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing. You may have to change into a gown.

You will lie on a table during the procedure. An ultrasound professional will apply gel to your skin in the area they will examine. Then, they move the transducer over the area to capture pictures.

The exam is painless. You may feel some pressure as the transducer moves over your body. Most ultrasounds take 30 to 60 minutes.

A radiologist will review your images and write a report for your doctor to discuss with you.
