Interventional Radiology

Minimally Invasive, Expert Care: Interventional Radiology at Emory Healthcare

Interventional radiology (IR) offers advanced, minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions. These treatments can remove the need for surgery.

Using real-time imaging, our specialists can target problem areas with precision and help you recover faster with less pain and downtime.

Our interventional radiologists are skilled specialists. They go through years of extra training to learn to use imaging as a treatment tool.

What is Interventional Radiology?

You’ve probably had an imaging test like an X-ray or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at some point. Interventional radiology uses imaging not just to find health problems, but to help fix them.

With nothing more invasive than a small cut, we use imaging to diagnose and treat concerns throughout the body.

Interventional radiology is generally safer, faster and cheaper than traditional surgery. Most people can go home the same day.

Interventional Radiology Procedures

We use interventional radiology for many conditions. Some of the procedures we offer include:

  • Arterial procedures diagnose and treat problems affecting blood flow through the arteries
  • Biliary procedures focus on the liver, bile ducts, gallbladder and gallbladder ducts
  • Hemodialysis management helps patients with kidney failure
  • Interventional neuroradiology uses imaging to diagnose and treat problems affecting the brain and spinal cord (such as stroke and compression fractures)
  • Renal procedures diagnose and treat certain kidney problems
  • Treatment of liver tumors
  • Uterine fibroid embolization to treat non-cancerous growths in the uterus
  • Venous procedures that address problems with veins
  • Miscellaneous procedures such as draining an abscess or placing a port

What to Expect During Your Procedure

How you prepare for your interventional radiology procedure depends on the type of treatment you’re having. Your care team will give you detailed instructions so you know exactly what to do.

In most cases, you’ll need to avoid eating or drinking for several hours beforehand and arrange for someone to drive you home after the procedure.

During the procedure, you will lie on a special table. A shot will numb the area where we make a small cut. You might also receive mild sedation, meaning you’ll be awake but relaxed during the procedure.

We use imaging to help guide tools. It may take a few minutes to several hours, depending on the procedure.

Afterwards, we’ll take you to a recovery room, where we’ll care for you until you’re ready to go home.
