Interventional Radiology

Minimally Invasive, Expert Care: Interventional Radiology at Emory Healthcare

Interventional radiology (IR) offers advanced, minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions. These treatments can remove the need for surgery.

Using real-time imaging, our specialists can target problem areas with precision and help you recover faster with less pain and downtime.

Our interventional radiologists are skilled specialists. They go through years of extra training to learn to use imaging as a treatment tool.

What is Interventional Radiology?

Interventional radiologists diagnose and treat disease. Using imaging methods to guide them, they treat a wide range of conditions in the body through the insertion of wires, catheters and other devices.

Following interventional radiology, most people can go home the same day.

What to Expect During Your Procedure

Your care team will give you detailed instructions about your procedure, including the location, arrival time, sedation needs, and guidelines on eating or drinking prior to the procedure. In some cases, you may need to arrange for someone to drive you home after the procedure.

During the procedure, you will lie on a special table. You may receive sedation based on the procedure you are having performed. You will be awake during the procedure. It may take a few minutes to several hours, depending on the procedure.

Afterwards, we’ll take you to a recovery room, where we’ll care for you until you’re ready to go home.
