X-Ray

Why Choose Emory Healthcare When You Need an X-Ray

Whether you’re dealing with a broken bone, pneumonia or another concern, you want the best possible X-ray image so you can quickly get the care you need.

At Emory Radiology & Imaging, we use advanced X-ray technology operated by our compassionate, expert technicians.

What is an X-Ray?

Many of us have had X-rays, but how many of us know how they work? An X-ray uses a very small amount of radiation to make pictures of structures (like bones and some organs) inside your body.

The amount of radiation you receive during an X-ray isn’t much different than the natural radiation you’re exposed to during daily life. For example, the amount of radiation from one adult chest x-ray is about the same as 10 days of natural radiation.

"I was so happy and at ease with the technician.  He thoroughly explained the procedure beforehand and told me everything he was doing throughout. I felt listened to, cared for, and respected. This procedure is an uncomfortable and kind of scary experience, but I felt at perfect ease and trusted the technician's expertise."

Types of X-Rays

Standard X-rays make a still image of your body. X-ray technicians can also use a special type called fluoroscopy to see how structures move and work inside your body.

We often use X-rays to look for:

  • Blocked intestines and other bowel issues
  • Bone breaks and fractures
  • Dislocated joints
  • Pneumonia and other lung problems
  • Swallowed foreign objects

What to Expect During Your X-Ray

You don’t need to do anything special to get ready for most X-rays. If you have a fluoroscopy, your doctor will tell you if there’s something to do to prepare.

We may ask you to remove jewelry, glasses or other objects before your X-ray. You may also need to change into a gown.
