What is a PET Scan?

A PET scan is a type of imaging test that helps doctors see how your organs and tissues are working. It uses a special camera and a small amount of a safe, radioactive substance called a tracer.

Before your scan, you'll either get the tracer through a small IV in your arm, or you might swallow it or breathe it in. The tracer moves through your body and highlights areas that are more active. These areas show up as bright spots on the scan.

PET scans help doctors find health problems early, including:

  • Brain conditions like memory disorders or seizures
  • Different types of cancer
  • Heart problems
  • The test is not painful, and most people don’t have any side effects. The amount of radiation used is very small and considered safe.

"The technologist was most helpful and went above and beyond to calm my nerves about getting into the machine by showing me ahead of time so I wouldn't worry. Can't say enough good things.... His bedside manner and way of explaining the situation is wonderful. I feel very confident in his abilities and so glad I am working with him and his staff."

Types of PET Scans

Emory offers several types of PET scans. Sometimes, your doctor may combine a PET scan with a CT scan or MRI to provide greater details in the images.

Common PET scans include:

  • PET scan
  • PET/CT scan: Cardiac or oncological
  • PET/MRI scan

What to Expect During Your PET Scan

Before your scan, your doctor will let you know if you need to avoid eating, drinking or taking certain medications. Wear warm, comfortable clothes without zippers or metal. You may be asked to change into a gown.

When you arrive, a trained radiology professional will connect an IV and inject the tracer. You’ll rest for 30 to 60 minutes while your body absorbs it.

The PET scanner is shaped like a large ring or doughnut. You will lie on a padded table that slowly moves into the machine for the scan. You need to stay very still during this time.

The scan may take 30 to 60 minutes.

If you feel nervous about tight spaces, let your doctor know ahead of time. They may give you medicine to help you feel more relaxed.

The tracer won’t make you feel different, and your body will naturally get rid of it after the scan. Drinking plenty of fluids afterward can help flush it out faster.

A radiologist will review your scan images and write a report for your doctor to discuss with you.
