Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis) Treatment
Tennis Elbow, or Lateral Epicondylitis, treatment typically involves taking steps to rest the affected tendon. Treating tennis elbow can include the use of physical therapy, exercises and medication. Response to tennis elbow treatment therapy, including the items listed below, is common in most patients.
Typical Tennis Elbow Treatment Options
- Rest and a cessation of the activities causing pain
- Ice applied in a cold pack to the inner side of the elbow for 15-20 about 4 or 5 times each day
- Medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen for pain and inflammation
Additional Treatment Options for Tennis Elbow
- Wearing a compression brace on the forearm to limit the amount of force placed on the elbow in daily activities
- Heat applied before preparing to play a sport
- Eccentric strengthening exercises of the forearm and wrist extensor muscles
- Special injections into the tendon attachment of the lateral epicondyle to reduce pain, decrease inflammation, and promote healing.
- For refractory cases, minimal invasive outpatient surgery can often resolve symptoms
