Trigger finger release surgery is used to release the constriction on the tendon in a patient’s hand that has been diagnosed with trigger finger. This is a minimally invasive surgery where the hand surgeon makes a small incision in the palm of the hand on the affected finger. The skin and soft tissue are spread to expose the tendon. The surgeon uses cutting instruments to carefully divide the tendon to release the constriction. The tendon is not completely cut, only the portion that is causing the constriction and pain is cut.
At the end of the surgery, the incision is closed with sutures and the hand is bandaged. Our hand surgeons at Emory recommend hand therapy and also encourage the patient to begin finger motion the day after surgery.
