Why Sports-specific Programs Matter
A runner uses her body differently than a gymnast or dancer – and each female athlete has a different risk of injury depending on their sport, training and background. That’s why we’ve created programs that focus on specific sports. These are led by sports medicine specialists with experience in the sport you’re passionate about.
We bring together our medical knowledge along with our understanding of the demands you (and your body) may be facing. We treat athletes in every sport and at every level, including running expertise and expertise in dance medicine and aesthetic sports.
If you don’t see your sport, let us know. We’re constantly developing new programs for female athletes, and we want to know what matters to you.
Emory Healthcare is the official healthcare provider of the Atlanta Dream. Every day our experience grows. Every day, we are advancing our knowledge base and methodologies so we can better serve our female athletes and patients.
Helping Female Athletes Heal from Injuries
Female athletes are at higher risk of certain injuries compared to male athletes – even in the same sport. Women are more likely to experience:
- Bone stress injuries
- ACL tear
Our providers at Emory’s Women Sports Medicine Program understand these risks. Our goal is to facilitate your recovery from injury. We have experience diagnosing and treating these injuries, along with many others. And, we’re committed to giving you the tools and resources you need to reduce your risk of future injury.
Along with our sport-specific clinics, we also offer clinics designed to help female athletes reduce their risk of injury. Our bone stress injury clinic offers multidisciplinary care for women suffering from bone stress injuries, including recurrent injuries. We work closely with sports medicine providers, physical therapists, nutritionists and many others to help you recover stronger than ever before.

Relative Energy Deficiency in Sports
Soccer, dancing, gymnastics, running – whatever your sport, your body needs adequate fuel to kick, jump and move. Underfueling – not getting the energy your body requires for your level of physical activity - can lead to an increased risk of bone stress injuries, overuse injuries and can even delay healing and recovery. It can also affect your performance level and keep you performing at your best.
Our clinic specializes in treating athletes who are injured or are at risk of injury, because of relative energy deficiency in sports (RED-S). If you think RED-S is affecting your performance or slowing down your recovery, make an appointment with our team today. We’re here to help you get and stay strong.
