What Causes a Traumatic Brain Injury?

A TBI can happen at any time. Common causes for TBI include:

  • Slips and falls
  • Auto and cycling accidents
  • Sports injuries
  • Assault

What is at Risk of a Traumatic Brain Injury?

A TBI can happen to anyone, but there are some conditions that make you more likely to develop a severe injury. These include:

  • Being active in contact sports like football, hockey, rugby, boxing, soccer, or baseball

  • Working in hazardous occupations like the military, first responders and police officers

  • Being a victim of violence

  • Being male and/or 75+ years of age

  • Using drugs and drinking too much alcohol

  • Having a previous history of TBI

What is the Signs or Symptoms of a Brain Injury?

Your symptoms will vary due to the severity of your TBI. Common symptoms include:

  • Blurred or unusual vision
  • Ringing in your ears
  • Slurred speech
  • Fainting
  • Confusion or dizziness
  • Nausea, vomiting, or both
  • Tiredness (fatigue)
  • Issues with your memory or mood, including agitation or anxiety, trouble concentrating or making decisions, or not being able to control your emotions

How is a Traumatic Brain Injury Diagnosed?

our doctor may diagnose a brain injury with a physical examination and a review of your medical history. Your doctor may also order a CT scan and conduct a neurologic exam to check your reflexes, recall and coordination.
