Noninvasive Treatments for TBI

Noninvasive treatments—treatments that do not require breaking or entering the skin—may include:

  • Blood pressure medication
  • Pain and nausea medication
  • Physical and mental rest, including stress-reducing activities
  • Physical therapy and speech therapy
  • Ongoing observation

These treatments are usually safer and allow you to heal faster.

Treatments for Severe TBI

If there is swelling in your brain, your doctors will respond with:

  • Intravenous (IV) fluids

  • Lowering your body temperature

  • Draining fluid from your brain by drilling a small hole in the skull (ventriculostomy)

  • Removing part of the skull to relieve pressure

Brain surgery is also an option in severe cases, or if less invasive therapies aren’t working. Our nationally recognized neurosurgeons will operate to:

  • Remove an object that has pierced the skull
  • Remove a blood clot
  • Repair bleeding
