What is a Spinal Cord Injury?

Your brain and body communicate by sending messages through your spinal cord, a bundle of nerves along your spine. Spinal cord injuries may result from trauma, infections or other health issues. These can put pressure and damage your spinal cord, disrupting the communication between your brain and body. This may cause a host of issues, including:

  • Breathing difficulties
  • Loss of bowel or bladder control
  • Partial or total loss of movement or feeling
  • Tingling in your hands or feet

Spinal Cord Injury Diagnosis

Doctors make a diagnosis based on your injury, symptoms and a physical exam. They also rely on imaging studies. These may include:

  • CT scan
  • MRI scan
  • X-ray

In some cases, doctors may do a myelogram. This imaging test uses contrast dye to make it easier to see your spinal cord and surrounding tissues. It may be helpful if you can’t have an MRI or doctors need more information about your spinal cord injury.

Once doctors stabilize you after your initial injury, they may do a neurological exam. This exam evaluates your muscle strength and sensation. The exam provides more information about the extent of your injury.
