Medical Treatments for Pituitary Disorders

If your pituitary disorder or tumor isn’t causing symptoms, you may not need treatment right away. Our team may observe and monitor your condition before recommending a specific treatment plan.

If tests reveal you need medical treatment, we’ll work with you to develop a medication-based plan to:

  • Eliminate symptoms
  • Prevent damage to your pituitary gland
  • Return hormone levels to normal

In some cases, medication may also help to shrink a tumor.

Our team develops personalized treatment plans for a range of pituitary disorders, including:

  • Functional pituitary tumors: These tumors produce excess growth hormone. Acromegaly, Cushing’s disease and prolactinomas are examples of pituitary disorders caused by functional pituitary tumors.

  • Non-functional pituitary tumors: These tumors are discovered when they cause problems with your vision by compressing the optic nerves.

  • Pituitary hormone deficiencies: Reduced hormone levels affect the thyroid, adrenal glands, water balance, reproductive organs and growth hormone secretion.

Pituitary disorder medications may cause side effects. We will work with you to manage any discomfort.

Surgical Treatments for Pituitary Disorders

If you have a pituitary tumor, surgery may be your best treatment option.

Your doctor may recommend surgery if your tumor is secreting excess hormones.

Surgery may also be necessary if your tumor has grown large enough to affect surrounding structures and cause symptoms. For example, a pituitary tumor could put pressure on your optic nerve, affecting your sight. Surgery may prevent further vision loss. It may also increase the chances of vision recovery.

Doctors with Emory Pituitary Center are national leaders in performing minimally invasive pituitary tumor surgeries.

When minimally invasive surgery isn’t an option, we also offer traditional open surgical approaches.

Our team performs 500 pituitary surgeries a year, making us a high-volume surgery center.

Surgical treatments we offer include:

Radiosurgery for Pituitary Tumors

If doctors can’t treat your pituitary tumor with medication or remove it completely with surgery, you may need radiation therapy. This treatment, called radiosurgery, uses precisely targeted doses of radiation to destroy tumor cells.

At Emory Healthcare, our treatment system involves a device that delivers radiation very precisely. This device also shapes the radiation beam to match the shape and dimensions of the tumor. Our system is so precise that it can target an area within four-tenths of a millimeter. This means we can deliver the radiation to the tumor and spare surrounding tissues.

Radiosurgery, like all forms of radiation, is a treatment that works gradually. Your team will work with you to determine if your symptoms are severe enough for another, more fast-acting treatment.
