These seizures affect your entire brain. Specific types include:
Absence Seizures
These seizures don’t cause complete unconsciousness. They begin and end abruptly and last only a few seconds. Absence seizures may cause:
- You to stare into space
- Your eyes to blink or flutter
Atonic seizures
Atonic seizures, also called drop attacks, often:
- Are very brief, sometimes lasting just a few seconds
- Cause loss of muscle strength
- Result in sudden falls
Clonic seizures
Clonic seizures may:
- Cause rhythmic, jerking muscle movements, usually in your neck, face and arms
- Last for several continuous seconds
Grand mal seizures (tonic-clonic seizures)
These are the most severe type of seizure. They can last for several minutes and may cause:
- Complete loss of consciousness
- Confusion, headache, muscle soreness and sleepiness after your seizure
- Stiffening and jerking movements throughout your body
Myoclonic seizures
These seizures look a lot like clonic seizures. They:
- Are brief, sometimes lasting just a few seconds
- Cause sudden muscle twitches
Tonic seizures
Tonic seizures typically last from several seconds to a few minutes. They may:
- Affect your back, arms and legs
- Cause stiffening of your muscles
- Lead to sudden falls
