Seizure Treatments

Take Control of Your Seizures-- We're Here to Help

Seizures can affect your movement, speech and behavior. They come on unexpectedly. And they can have a dramatic impact on your quality of life.

Our neurology and neurosurgery teams at Emory Healthcare have everything you need to accurately diagnose and treat seizures. Here, you’ll find experienced neurologists and neurosurgeons, the latest diagnostic tests and a full range of nonsurgical and surgical seizure treatments.

Through the Emory Epilepsy Center, we offer the highest level of epilepsy care available. The center is one of the only level 4 epilepsy centers in the Southeastern U.S. You can rely on our expertise to diagnose and treat even the most complex seizure cases.

There are many treatment options for seizures. We base treatment decisions on the type of seizures you have and their cause. We may also consider the severity of your seizures.

Nonsurgical Seizure Treatments

If your seizures are related to a health issue, we first focus on treating that condition. We also try to eliminate any known cause of your seizures, such as medication reactions. Our goal is to prevent future seizure events.

We usually first treat ongoing seizures due to epilepsy with medication. There are many options. We work with you to find the medicine that best controls your seizures with the fewest possible side effects.

If medicines don’t provide relief, you may wish to consider a ketogenic diet. This eating plan limits carbohydrates and encourages high-fat foods. For some people, this diet is helpful.

Surgical Seizure Treatments

We may consider surgical treatment options if nonsurgical therapies aren’t effective.

Neurostimulation

Neurostimulation therapies deliver a mild electrical current to your brain. They involve surgically implanting a device in the body to deliver the current. Options include:

  • NeuroPace or responsive neurostimulation
  • Deep brain stimulation

  • Vagus nerve stimulation

Minimally invasive surgery

Minimally invasive surgery like stereotactic laser ablation (SLA) allows surgeons to locate and treat areas of the brain causing seizures.

Surgery

Surgery to remove a small portion of the brain responsible for seizures may provide relief if other treatments don’t work. We take special care to protect vital brain functions.
