If you’ve been diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS), it’s important to receive treatment right away. While there is no cure, Emory Neurology offers treatments that can help you feel better, faster.

GBS can be both physically and emotionally challenging. It often takes many months or even years to feel like yourself again. At Emory Healthcare, a team of compassionate neuromuscular experts work together to meet your medical and emotional needs.

To reduce your symptoms and speed recovery, we use advanced treatments based on the latest research and clinical trials. Your GBS care plan may include medications, physical therapy and other types of support.

Easing Your GBS Pain with Medication and Physical Therapy

GBS is a painful condition. Symptoms often limit your ability to move. To help you feel better and avoid new complications, you may receive medicine to:

  • Prevent blood clots (from lack of movement)
  • Relieve pain

You will likely need physical help to manage temporary weakness, paralysis or pain. Certified physical therapists at Emory Healthcare can help you overcome neuromuscular issues common with Guillain-Barre. Your care may include:

  • Movement of your arms and legs to help keep your muscles flexible and strong

  • Physical therapy to help you cope with fatigue and regain strength and proper movement

  • Training with adaptive devices, such as a wheelchair or braces, to give you mobility and self-care skills

What to Expect During Your Recovery

Recovery from Guillain-Barre syndrome can take many months or even years. After the first symptoms, your condition tends to worsen for about two weeks. These symptoms will peak within four weeks.

When your recovery begins, it usually lasts six to 12 months.
