What are Movement Disorders?

Movement disorders cause involuntary movements or unusual body positions. There are many types of movement disorders. Essential tremor and Parkinson’s disease are the most common.

Causes of Movement Disorders

There are many causes of movement disorders, including genetic or acquired.

Diagnosing Movement Disorders

Your doctor will review your health history and discuss your symptoms. They will do a physical exam as well.

You also may have additional tests, such as:

  • 3D kinematic motion analysis: Assessed movements
  • Blood and urine tests: Rules out other conditions
  • Dopamine reuptake transporter (DaT) scan: Looks at nerves in the brain/li>
  • Electroencephalography (EEG): Identifies how electrical signals move through your brain and nerves/li>
  • Electromyogram (EMG): Checks muscle activity
  • Imaging tests: Shows details of your brain or spine from MRIs or CT scans/li>
  • Neurologic exam: Checks your nerves and coordination
